Fiery skipper (Hylephila phyleus)

fiery skipper on aster chilensis

This is their favorite plant

I’ve never seen so many fiery skippers on one plant, not even on lantana. They’re really having a feast.

After looking around on the web, I saw that some consider them a pest because they eat lawn grasses. If they’re eating our ornamental native grasses, the grasses don’t seem to mind. I’ll gladly sacrifice a few leaves to get some late summer/fall butterflies in the garden.
