Crouching jumping spider (Phidippus audax)

Daring jumping spider on aster chilensis

Scary monster

This guy is so scary that his cousin who is somewhat less scary than he) was used by a “pest” control brochure that they left on our doorknob. Too bad he’s not a pest – he’s a beneficial predator. He builds no web, instead living a nomadic life in the garden. They don’t come into the house, except by accident.

The coolest thing about daring jumping spiders is that they have iridescent green chelicerae and they get large enough to see without squinting – up to twenty millimeters long (I haven’t seen any that large, though). Oops. That’s two cool things.

After the photo, the spider leaped to another plant, living up to his name and proving his jumping prowess.
