Plein Air Painting

acrylic - untitled

Sometimes it’s great to start the day painting on the river. Not only do we become better painters, it frees our minds to ponder designs in progress and let our subconscious process things in the background, from which they’ll eventually pop up with an “aha!”.

Nothing says, “let’s play!” than a paint sale at the art store. This time, there was a deal on Sennelier watercolor tubes. Maybe “deal” is not the right word, because these things aren’t cheap. But the colors! Intense blue, bright yellow, earthy browns and greens… all with good flow off the brush. It doesn’t hurt that I selected the colors based on what I see along the American River Parkway, either. – Mike

The river often looks more brown than green. A dark band of trees became the backdrop for a luminous green tree in this (almost) minimalist painting. – Annette
