A floating garden in Paris

Sacramento is on a river. Paris is on a river. Paris has tour boats, restaurant boats, bridges, walks, and now a floating garden. Sacramento has… um… Old Town.

The garden in Paris floats on barges moored to the bank of the Seine, adding instant green space to the city – and some great places to just sit and watch the passing boats. It’s got reclining chairs, decks, lounging pads, benches, walks, gardens, everything you could ask for.

Many plants float at water level, where they will eventually develop to hide the their floating containers. Once they’ve grown, they’ll become habitat, their roots will filter the river’s water, and there will be a bit more green in the city. Since they’re floating in the Seine, they won’t need any irrigation or fertilizer.

Maybe someday Sacramento will have more interaction with its rivers. Maybe there will be places where we too can sit comfortably and watch the river flow by, at a level where we can easily see the water without being at the top edge of a wall.

Until then, we’ll always have Paris.

closed for the day
Radio controlled drawbridges cut off access at night. When this place is closed, it’s closed!
bridge
The garden is actually on a series of linked barges, connected by bridges like this one. Each barge has its own character.
mist system
This (somewhat) secret garden has a mister system for a bit of mystery.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
The bridge retracts to close the park. Below, floating islands will develop dense vegetation as time passes. They’re already used by ducks.
the deck
This segment utilizes Seine-side seating and an ample deck for strolling. The tower-like structure in the background is the barge’s mooring that allows it to rise and fall with the river.
seating area
This barge’s decor is more harsh, but equally useful. It’s a great place to read or to wave to boats as they pass nearby.
bridge and greenhouse
The small greenhouse will hopefully become more lush as the garden ages.
lawn and seating
I don’t know if the trees’ roots will dangle into the river, or remain in growing medium. Hopefully they’ll be happy enough to develop ample canopies.
